Jillian Michaels Killer Cardio - Thoughts

Image
Jillian Michaels Killer Cardio contains two 25-minute workouts.  The focus is on cardio and no equipment is required.  There is not a warm-up or rather Jillian uses the first circuit as the warm-up.  There are four circuits and four exercises per circuit. There is a stretch at the end. In this workout, you are doing 20 seconds on and 10 seconds rest.  Jillian explains the next exercise or offers tips during the rest. You repeat each circuit twice. The exercises vary. There are several floor-based exercises and some functional type exercises.  These workouts were not my favorite. Workout 1 - 3 stars Workout 2 -  2 & 3/4 stars

Jillian Michaels Lift and Shred - Thoughts

Image
Jillian Michaels Lift and Shred contains two 30 minute strength workouts.  Jillian emphasizes that this is a strength workout and it is about lifting heavy. So unlike most of her workouts, most of the moves in Lift and Shred are single component moves.  Well, that is true for Workout 1 but Workout 2, does feature multiple compound moves. Both workouts start with a warm-up.  Then, you move onto the circuits. There are 4 circuits and each circuit features 4 exercises.  You repeat the exercises twice before moving on to the next circuit.  The workouts conclude with a stretch. Besides Jillian, there are two other cast members.  Jillian is really coaching and offering tips. She doesn't do much of the workout.  I found Jillian's interaction with the cast member a bit annoying but the workouts themselves I thought okay. Lift and Shred Workout 1 -  3 & 1/2 stars Lift and Shred Workout 2  - 3 stars

Jillian Michaels Hard Body - Thoughts

Image
Hard Body comes with two 45-minute circuit workouts.  There are six circuits per workout. Within the workout, Jillian will take you through the six circuits. After you complete the sixth circuit, you take it from the top, repeating all the circuits. The only difference is for some exercises where you focus on one side during the first go around, the second time through you work the opposite side.  Each circuit is composed of 3 to 5 exercises and includes a variety of athletic, body weight, drill-base, and yoga inspired moves. Some exercises are standing and some are floor based and a lot of the exercise are compound multi-component in nature.  Jillian adds dumbbells to certain exercises and she has a range of dumbbells - light, medium and heavy. There is a beginner modifier.  Level 1 clocks in at around 45 minutes and Level 2 clocks in at around 50 minutes. There is a DJ playing live music throughout the workout.  While I thought the music fine, I though...

Jillina Michaels Extreme Shed & Shread - Thoughts

Image
Jillian Michael's Extreme Shed and Shred contains two roughly 40 to 45 minute circuit style workouts.  Both workouts share the same warm up and cool down. In fact Jillian gives you the option of combing the two.  The DVD menu offers the following: Level 1 Level 2 Level 1 & 2 Both workouts have a beginner modifier and a modifier who shows more advance moves.  In Level 1, you are doing four circuits and in Level 2, there are five circuits. The circuits feature a variety of exercise moves from cardio, strength, yoga, and kickboxing. Weights are used in these workouts. 3 & 1/2 stars for both workouts.

Jillian Michaels Yoga Inferno - Thoughts

Image
Yoga Inferno is Jillian's second yoga specific workout DVD.  This DVD contains two workouts both which are around 30 minutes. The setting for this DVD is the desert.  Jillian and the cast are wearing sunglasses because of how bright the sun is . The music is background, but there is a nice beat to it, a bit groovy. Sometimes I find the music used in yoga workouts on the blah side but not this one. There are two cast participants; one that shows a less intense version of the move and one participant shows advance progression.  Jillian teaches and demonstrate moves and she offers her brand of motivation. In Workout One , Jillian takes you through a warm up. After the warm up, there are roughly three series or circuits where you are moving through various yoga postures. Some moves are static and some are dynamic. Throughout each series, there are cardio intervals that last roughly 30 seconds. Jillian uses vinyasas as her transition move between exercises. Some moves ...

Jillian Michaels One Week Shred - Thoughts

Image
The One Week Shred DVD contains two 30-minute plus workouts. One workout has a strength focus and the workout has a cardio focus.  Jillian design the workouts to do one in the morning and one in the evening. Each workout contains a beginner modifier and an advanced modifier. As in other Jillian Michaels workouts, she might start off showing you the exercise before she breaks off to offer instruction to the other cast members and us at home. Throughout the workout she is providing the motivational tips and forms points, and yes she is loud is certain parts. Strength - AM Workout clocks in at around 39 minutes. It does include a warm up and a cool down. There are a total of four circuits. Each of the circuits feature weighted exercises, and body weight moves for the lower and upper body. Some moves are performed from the standing position and other moves are floor based. You perform each circuit twice. Cardio - PM Workout clocks in at around 34 minutes. There is not really ...

Jillian Michaels Beginner Shred - Review

Image
Jillian Michaels Beginner Shred features three workouts.  Jillian labels these as 20 minute workouts, however, they are closer to 25 minutes. Each of the workouts features a warm up, three circuits, and a stretch. There are five exercises per circuit and each of the three circuits  are performed twice through before moving on to the next circuit. Jillian states that the workouts get progressively harder as you move through them. I didn't really think workout 3 was any harder than workouts 2 and 1. Jillian might start off doing one or two reps but she is mostly coaching and offering form pointers. There are two other cast members.  One cast member keeps the moves at the beginner level and one cast member shows more advance options. I like the set. It was nice bright and spacious. Equipment:  mat, dumbbells The DVD Menu offers the following options: Workouts        Workout 1        Workout 2  ...

Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown - Thoughts

Image
Yoga Meltdown .  This workout showed me that I have no balance. Seriously I was wobbling all over the place. Yoga Meltdown contains two 30 minute workouts, that Jillian calls Level 1 and Level 2.  I split the workouts over two different days. Essentially the workouts are the same except that Level 2 contains more advances poses than Level 1. I just recently started working out with Jillian, recently as in this past December and one thing I noticed about her workouts is that she likes her circuits.  Even this Yoga workout is in circuit form. Yoga Meltdown is made up of yoga poses which you flow in and out of (Jillian calls it repping it out) and yoga isolation's that you hold for 15 seconds after a set of reps. Certainly this is not traditional Yoga but nonetheless I actually like this workout.  Some of the poses were quite challenging (hence me wobbling all over the place).  This is especially true of the Level two workout. There is a beginner and ...

Jillian Michaels Body Revolution - Recap

Image
So Jillian Michaels Body Revolution system comes with a total of 15 workouts.  It is a 90 days system.  According to the literature, the sytem is design so that you are doing Phase 1 workouts for one month, Phase 2 workouts for a month and Phase 3 workouts for a month. While I really like the resistance workouts, I don't see myself doing these workouts for 3 months straight. However, I do think doing the workouts for three weeks is a great way to do them.  When I do the workouts again, I will probably sub-out the cardio.  While I like cardio 2, I didn't really care for cardio 1 and 3. I love the length of these workouts.  All the workouts clocked in under 36 minutes in length.  I was  able to add some 10 minute and 20 minute workouts as add-ons and still kept my workout time to under an hour. I forgot to mention when I introduce the system (3 weeks back) that it also comes with a 71 page 90 Day Journal.  You can record meals, calories and...

Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Phase 3 - Thoughts

Image
Phase 3!!!!  Body Revolution Phase 3 that is - like Phase 1 and Phase 2, it contains 4 resistance-weight workouts and 1 cardio workout.  All workouts are around 35 minutes. The format is exactly the same as the other two phases.  However, the exercises are a bit harder and a bit more extreme (extreme as in the wheel push ups in circuit 2 of workout 12). The cardio has more impact and most of the exercises are compound in nature.  Expect lots of plank work - Jillian loves plank work in all its forms. A note about Cardio 3.  Jillian does some 24 exercises but she switches the order a bit when she moved from circuit one to circuit two. I don't think this was intentional. I think she forgot where she was.  Not a big deal, but the spreadsheet will be slightly off depending on which circuit you are on. Again a solid group of workouts.  3 & 3/4 stars

Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Phase 2 - Thoughts

Image
Body Revolution Phase 2 is very similar to Phase 1.  You have 4 resistance workouts and 1 cardio workout.  The difference between the two phases is that you are working a little bit harder in phase 2 than phase 1.  The cardio has more impact.  The weight work is combining more muscle groups per exercise performed. I definitely like the Phase 2 Cardio 2 workout better than Cardio 1 workout in Phase 1.  In workouts 5 and 7, you are working the "front of the body"  and in workouts 6 and 8 your are working the "back of the body".  Roughly that translates into workouts 5 and 7 being heavily focus on Triceps, Chest, and Shoulder.  In workouts 6 and 8, you are working back, biceps, and some shoulders. Also a noted difference in Phase 2, is that you are using a lot more of the cable (resistance tubing) than you did in Phase 1.  I would say about a third of the exercises featured the tubing, about a third used weight and the other thir...

Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Phase 1 - Review

Image
Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Phase 1 includes 5 workouts.  4 of the workouts are weight and resistance training and there is one cardio workout.  In Jillian's 90 day rotation, you are doing this group of workouts for the first 4 week. These workouts are also the workouts used to " Kickstart Your Metabolism".  So the workouts are all circuit style and pretty much follow the same format.  All the workouts include a brief warm up and cool down.   For the weight workouts, Jillian takes you through 4 circuits.  You do a series of four resistance exercises.  This is followed by a minute of cardio and then your repeat the four resistance moves before moving on to the next circuit. The cardio workout is circuit base to. After the warm up, you start with a series of 8 moves an d then you repeat the 8 moves two more times for a total of three circuits.  I had to think hard but I am pretty sure that these are my first Jillian Michaels' worko...

December 2013 Monthly Rotation

Image
Happy December Everyone. Practically every single workout in December will be new for me so I will review them in chunks. Essentially I will be doing Jillian Michael's Body Revolution workouts and Jaana Kunitz's Figure 8 Fitness workouts. As most of the Body Revolution workouts are short, I do have a few add ons I am planning to do.  I have also added my two favorite workouts from The FIRM's ZipTrainer workout system.
